A party of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe made first ethno-historic contact with the English in 1607/1608 while camped at a village called Tomihitton in what is now Nottoway County. On the 1607 map of Captain John Smith map we were referred to as Mangoak or Mengwe, by the Algonquian speaking Tribes. In 1650 upon making contact with Edward Bland in what is now Sussex County, per his diary entries, we were referred to again by the Algonquian speaking Tribes as “Nadawa,” which soon reverted to Nottoway.
In our Native Iroquoian Tongue (Dar-sun-ke) we call ourselves CHEROENHAKA –People At The Fork of The Stream which is the true name of the Nottoway Indians. Based on an Archeological Dig in 1965, 1966 and 1969, in Southampton County, wherein, some 131 grave skeleton remains were dug up and place in shoe boxes at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. (The Hand Site – 44SN22), document members of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe have been in Southampton County since 1580 and most recently based on an Archeological Dig labeled “Cactus Hill” wherein a “Clovis Point” was discovered dating the tribe back to some 18,000 years.
